Replacing Teeth

Implants, bridges and dentures, and how to choose between them.

There are many ways in which we can replace missing teeth. Each clinical situation is different, so your dentist will need to assess your mouth to determine the options available to you. In general, the options are implants, bridges and dentures.

Implants

These are crowns which are supported by a synthetic/titanium “root” or screw. This is the state-of-the-art treatment option because it provides you with a tooth which looks, acts and feels as close to a natural tooth as we can get. It is a very successful treatment providing patients with a high degree of satisfaction. There is usually more than one phase of treatment involved, and this will be explained to you by Dr. Anton at your consultation.

Bridges

This is the traditional way of replacing a missing tooth, or teeth, in between two healthy teeth. It involves making a cap for the two teeth adjacent to the gap and linking them together with a porcelain tooth. This is also a good option as it is fixed (it does not come out) and looks and feels natural.

Dentures

Dentures are false teeth made from metal or acrylic. They can be used to replace a few missing teeth by clipping on to the remaining teeth, or they can replace an entire mouth of teeth when all the teeth have been lost. They are the most cost-effective tooth replacement, but they also require the greatest learning curve. Millions of people around the world wear dentures successfully, and if made well, they can not only give you a natural-looking new smile, but help you to look younger too!
